U.S. Pond Hockey Championships Expand Tournament, Add New 'Rink Rat' Division
Let the race for the Golden Shovel begin! Organizers of the U.S. Pond Hockey Championships (USPHC) -- America's largest outdoor pond hockey tournament -- today announced registration and expansion plans for the second annual tournament.
Set for Jan. 19-21, 2007 on the frozen waters of Lake Calhoun in Minneapolis, the three-day, four-on-four outdoor hockey competition for men and women will include 222 teams: 160 open teams, 15 women's teams, 15 senior men's teams, and a new division, Rink Rat, which will hold up to 32 teams.
About the Rink Rat Division
The Rink Rat division was created to meet the demand for men and women age 18 or older who love pond hockey, but have a little less experience on the ice. Rink Rat teams are guaranteed three games, which will be played Sunday, Jan. 21. Leading teams will move on to the medal round and play up to two more games that day.
How to Register for a USPHC Team
Registration for the 2007 U.S. Pond Hockey Championships will open Monday, Oct. 16 at 8 a.m. Lake Calhoun, Minnesota time (CDT) at http://www.uspondhockey.com . Senior men's, women's and Rink Rat division teams will fill completely on a first come, first served basis.
The first 110 of 160 teams in the open division also will fill on a first come, first served basis. The remaining 50 teams in the open division will be drafted via lottery.
About the Open Division Lottery
Once the first 110 teams in the open division fill, automatically teams will be entered into the lottery pool for the remaining 50 team slots. All teams that register at http://www.uspondhockey.com for the waitlist through Nov. 15 will be placed into the lottery pool as well. On Nov. 17, organizers will randomly select 50 teams from the pool to be placed onto the official U.S. Pond Hockey Championships roster and notify teams.
