Pond Hockey event is becoming reality

From News Services -- The U.S. Pond Hockey Championships continue to develop. Teams are still signing up for next month's inaugural U.S. Pond Hockey Championships, to be played on Lake Calhoun in Minneapolis. Plans for the tournament were announced in October. It will be four-on-four, and 25 games will be played simultaneously across the lake.

Upwards of 128 teams are expected to participate. The event's website is uspondhockey.com. Of course, the ice must cooperate, and that's expected. "They're already ice fishing out there now," said Eric Davis, one of the event's organizers, reached late last week in his office not far from Lake Calhoun. "They don't have their trucks out there yet, but overall we weren't figuring for this kind of ice for another week or two. We'll be ready."

A couple of Minnesotans who played in the NHL, Reed Larson and Phil Housley, have committed to play. And the event caught the attention of the Boston Globe this week when two teams from Massachusetts signed up. The six members of one of the Massachusetts teams are 2000 and 2001 Amherst College grads, according to team member Chris Orszulak, Class of '01, from Longmeadow, Mass. Orszulak, Gregg DiNardo and Darce Swaggert are all investment bankers. Joe Graceffa is a screenwriter in Los Angeles. Andy Jones is in graduate school, and Rob Hill in medical school. "We were all roommates at Amherst, and every year we try to get together," Orszulak said. "A couple of the guys are from Minnesota, and I think it was Darce who spotted it. Just seemed like the perfect thing for us to do."

The teams will vie for the Golden Shovel, 12 feet top to bottom with a scoop 3 feet wide. Why play for a shovel? If you're asking, you just don't get it.

  eBay Teams!

Thanks to everyone who bid on the eBay Charity teams. Not only are you now officially entered in the U.S. Pond Hockey Championships, your winning bids are benefiting two great charities: The Herb Brooks Foundation and the DinoMights Inner City Youth Hockey Team.

The winning bidder on the sixth eBay charity team had to retract their bid at the last minute after they realized they couldn’t make it to the tournament weekend. However, thanks to their priorities being a bit mixed up, there is now one more team up for grabs.

US Pond Hockey Tournament Offers Rink Sponsorships

The U.S. Pond Hockey Championships (USPHC) -- Jan. 20-22, 2006 on Lake Calhoun in Minneapolis -- is America's largest outdoor pond hockey tournament. The three-day, 128-team, four on four competition for men and women invites outdoor hockey enthusiasts nationwide to participate. To raise funds the event offers rinks as promotional venues.

For Information, Click Here!

Developed by a group of passionate pond hockey enthusiasts, USPHC seeks to draw attention to the traditions of outdoor hockey and to support important causes. A percentage of proceeds will benefit the Herb Brooks Foundation and DinoMights Inner City Youth Hockey.

The tournament will feature 25 rinks on Lake Calhoun and a field of 128 teams competing in open, women's, and senior men's divisions. There will be openings for 96 open teams, 16 women's teams, and 16 senior men's teams.

Teams will carry six players, with games being played in a four-on-four, no goalie format. Games will be two 17.5-minute halves with a two-minute intermission. Rinks will be cleared in true pond fashion - shoveled off prior to games by the two teams on deck. Official rules will be no checking, fighting or lifting, and goals must be scored on the attacking side of center ice.

The USPHC will be the largest outdoor hockey tournament of its kind in the U.S., and the first to feature a women's championship division. Each team will be guaranteed three round-robin games with the opportunity to continue on to the medal round for a chance at winning the Pond version of the Stanley Cup - the "Golden Shovel."

THE SITE

The USPHC will be held on the west side of Lake Calhoun, in the heart of the Minneapolis Chain of Lakes - home to 5.5 million visitors per year with majestic views of the downtown Minneapolis skyline. The ice site will feature 150 by 75 foot hockey rinks "Calhoun Gardens," a 25th and central rink, will be surrounded by bleachers and lighted for night-time exhibition and notable games.

THE EVENT

In addition to tournament play, the weekend will feature nightly exhibition games on the lighted center rink. Featured teams and participants will include NHL, Olympic and NCAA alumni, as well as media and other luminaries. The "Warming House" hospitality tent will feature accommodations for players, guests and nightly pond celebrations with musical entertainment. There also will be a free skating site for spectators and other family activities.

RINK SPONSORSHIPS

Seventeen rinks are available as effective 'promo venues' to promote the corporate image of and generate leads for sponsor organizations. Sponsorship features include:

Banners, Logo Placements
Point Of Purchase Displays
Sample Distribution To Tens Of Thousands
TV & Radio Coverage

  Your Last Chance To Register

We officially closed registration for the open division last week when we selected 22 teams as part of our wait list lottery system. Congrats to everyone who made it. But, please know there is a way for six more teams to enter into the USPHC, and these slots may be the best of all because they help two great causes.

Charity Teams on eBay—way less annoying than those ringing bells!

Today through Wednesday, Dec. 21, you and your friends can bid on six official team slots at eBay. Bidding will open at the original $300 entry fee. All monies raised through the resulting auction will go directly to the two USPHC beneficiaries –– DinoMights Inner City Youth Hockey and the Herb Brooks Foundation.

Already in the tournament and want to buy another slot as a gift for a friend? Didn’t make it in the lottery but still want to play? Know someone with adult ADD that procrastinated and never signed up for USPHC?

This is your or their last and coolest opportunity. Sign up, help out a few great causes, and get on the pond. To get your bid on, go to http://www.uspondhockey.com/page/eBAy-Teams.jsp
